Lucky Air delays Udon Thani launch after partner rethink
Udon Thani airport says it is ready for international services as Lucky Air and its partner consider scheduled flights on the Kunming route.
Lucky Air and its charter partner are considering a scheduled service between Kunming and Udon Thani after changes to the partner’s operating plans forced the postponement of their charter launch, Thailand’s Department of Airports said.
Director-general Danai Ruangson said the department had received a formal explanation from the airline attributing the delay to revised plans by the partner responsible for jointly operating the Kunming–Udon Thani–Kunming charter service.
Tour operators had notified passengers in advance and completed full refunds of tour payments, he said, following the postponement of the Lucky Air launch.
The airline and its partner still see potential in Thailand’s upper northeastern market. They are examining whether scheduled flights could provide a more sustainable connection between China and the region, although the change remains under consideration.
Airport confirms international readiness
The Department of Airports said Udon Thani Airport was fully prepared to accommodate international flights, seeking to reassure tourism and aviation businesses following the postponement.
According to the department, Udon Thani is one of 11 international airports in Thailand holding a public aerodrome certificate from the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT).
Its facilities include:
- A runway measuring 3,050 metres long and 45 metres wide.
- An apron with 11 aircraft parking stands.
- Passenger terminal capacity of 3.4 million passengers a year.
- Complete customs, immigration and quarantine facilities.
The department said this infrastructure would allow the airport to accommodate Thai and foreign airlines looking to open new routes and support Udon Thani’s development as a regional aviation hub.
Transport improvements planned for horticultural expo
The airport is also preparing access and transport improvements ahead of the Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo 2026.
The event is scheduled for November 1, 2026, to March 14, 2027, according to the International Association of Horticultural Producers’ official listing.
Preparations include widening airport access roads to three lanes and arranging more than 40 connecting transport services a day under the One Transport system.
