Flood alert issued for four Nan districts after heavy rain warning
A Cell Broadcast alert urges people in Na Noi and Na Muen districts and parts of Wiang Sa and Ban Luang to prepare for flash floods, landslides and overflowing waterways.
- A flood alert was issued for parts of Nan province until September 20 following a Thai Meteorological Department warning of heavy to very heavy rain.
- The alert specifically targets at-risk communities in four districts: Na Noi, Na Muen, Wiang Sa, and Ban Luang, which received a Cell Broadcast warning.
- Authorities are on high alert, monitoring for potential flash floods, landslides, and overflowing rivers, with emergency response plans in place.
- Residents in low-lying and foothill areas have been advised to move belongings to higher ground and prepare for possible evacuation.
The Nan Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command issued a most urgent notice dated Tuesday (September 15, 2026), instructing heads of government agencies, district chiefs and executives of all local administrative organisations to prepare for and monitor natural-disaster conditions until September 20.
The order followed a warning from the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) that parts of Thailand would face heavy to very heavy rain from September 17 to 20, with the North affected first.
Cold air from China was moving southwards as the monsoon trough and south-west monsoon strengthened, causing heavy rainfall to accumulate.
The Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) called for close monitoring of flash floods, forest run-off, landslides, waterlogging and rivers overflowing their banks, particularly in high-risk and repeatedly affected areas.
Relevant agencies were instructed to:
- Monitor water conditions: Track water levels continuously, warn residents immediately if levels rise abnormally or landslides appear likely, and implement evacuation plans without delay when necessary.
- Maintain round-the-clock readiness: Keep officials, tools, equipment and disaster-response machinery ready at all times. Prepare temporary shelters and sufficient food, drinking water and other essentials for evacuees.
- Coordinate emergency assistance: Mobilise government agencies, the private sector and volunteers to provide livelihood support, medical care and transport, including boats and high-clearance vehicles. Damaged roads and homes must also be repaired as quickly as possible.
If conditions showed signs of becoming severe, agencies were told to activate their emergency response plans and immediately notify the Nan command on 054-716174.
Cell Broadcast sent to at-risk communities
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), working with AIS, True and NT, sent a Cell Broadcast alert on September 16, warning of continuing heavy rain and related flood and landslide risks in the following areas:
- Na Noi district
- Na Muen district
- Yap Hua Na, Mae Khaning, Ai Na Lai and Mae Sakhon subdistricts in Wiang Sa district
- Ban Fa subdistrict in Ban Luang district
People living along canals and waterways, in low-lying areas and on foothill slopes were advised to:
- Monitor conditions closely and move belongings to higher ground
- Relocate vehicles and secure valuables and important documents
- Beware of electric shocks and care for vulnerable people
- Evacuate to a safe location if they are in a high-risk area
- Contact a subdistrict head, village head or community leader if assistance is needed
