Heavy rain to persist across Thailand through September 27

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued Warning No. 12 at 5pm on Saturday (September 26), warning of heavy to very heavy rain across Thailand through September 27.

Areas at risk on September 26

Very heavy rain

• North: Tak, Kamphaeng Phet and Phetchabun
• Central region: Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Lop Buri, Saraburi, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Suphan Buri, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkhram, including Bangkok and surrounding provinces
• East: Nakhon Nayok, Chachoengsao, Prachin Buri, Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat
• South: Ranong, Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan

Rain expected to ease from September 28

The TMD said the Central region, including Bangkok and surrounding provinces, and the East would continue to experience persistent rain on September 26-27, with heavy rain in many areas and very heavy rain in some locations.

Rainfall is expected to begin easing on September 28, although heavy rain may still occur in parts of the western North and Central region.

The conditions are being caused by an active low-pressure area covering the Central region, Bangkok and surrounding provinces, which is moving along a monsoon trough across the Central region.

A rather strong southwest monsoon is also prevailing over the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand.

Residents were warned to remain alert for heavy and accumulated rainfall, which could cause flooding, particularly in foothill areas near waterways and in low-lying locations.

Travellers should avoid routes that are repeatedly affected by flooding, especially low-lying roads where temporary inundation may occur.

Strong waves in Gulf and Andaman Sea

Winds and waves in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand remain rather strong.

The upper Gulf and upper Andaman Sea are expected to see waves of two to three metres, rising above three metres during thunderstorms.

Waves in the lower Gulf and lower Andaman Sea will be around two metres, rising above two metres during thunderstorms.

Mariners should proceed with caution and avoid sailing in stormy areas.

Small boats in the upper Gulf and upper Andaman Sea should remain ashore through September 27.

• Thunderstorms are expected across most of the area, with heavy to very heavy rain in some locations.
• Temperatures will range from 24-25°C to 27-28°C, with variable winds of 10-25 kilometres per hour.

North

• Thunderstorms are forecast across 60% of the region, with heavy rain in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Phichit and Phitsanulok.
• Very heavy rain is expected in Tak, Kamphaeng Phet and Phetchabun.
• Temperatures will range from 23-25°C to 31-36°C, with easterly winds of 10-20km/h.

Northeast

• Thunderstorms are forecast across 70% of the region, with heavy rain in Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima and Buri Ram.
• Temperatures will range from 23-25°C to 29-32°C, with easterly winds of 10-25km/h.

Central region

• Thunderstorms are expected across 80% of the region, with heavy to very heavy rain in many areas including Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Lop Buri, Saraburi, Suphan Buri, Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Ratchaburi, Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkhram.
• Temperatures will range from 22-25°C to 28-30°C, with variable winds of 10-25km/h.

East

• Thunderstorms are forecast across 80% of the region, with heavy to very heavy rain in many areas including Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Chachoengsao, Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat.
• Temperatures will range from 23-25°C to 27-29°C, with variable winds of 20-40km/h.
• Waves will be two to three metres high and exceed three metres during thunderstorms.

South, east coast

• Thunderstorms are forecast across 60% of the region, with heavy rain in Chumphon and Surat Thani and very heavy rain in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan.
• Temperatures will range from 21-24°C to 28-35°C.
• From Surat Thani northwards, northwesterly winds will reach 20-35km/h, with waves of about two metres and above three metres during thunderstorms.
• From Nakhon Si Thammarat southwards, westerly winds will reach 15-35km/h, with waves of one to two metres and above three metres during thunderstorms.

South, west coast

• Thunderstorms are forecast across 70% of the region, with heavy rain in Ranong and Phang Nga.
• Temperatures will range from 23-26°C to 29-34°C.
• From Phang Nga northwards, westerly winds will reach 20-40km/h, with waves of two to three metres and above three metres during thunderstorms.
• From Phuket southwards, southwesterly winds will reach 15-35km/h, with waves of one to two metres and above two metres during thunderstorms.
