The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) aims to have Bangkok’s Orange Line and southern Purple Line extension fully open by 2030, with free public trials on the eastern Orange Line expected in December 2027.
MRTA’s latest update covers construction progress at the end of September 2026, while the first Orange Line trainset delivery is expected in November.
Civil works on the southern Purple Line extension from Tao Poon to Rat Burana, at Kanchanaphisek Ring Road, were 79.35% complete at the end of September.
The Purple Line extension received Cabinet approval for construction on July 25, 2017, and work began on April 25, 2022. MRTA’s implementation plan, acknowledged by its board on January 20, 2026, targets an opening in November 2030.
MRTA is revising the public-private partnership (PPP) study for the railway systems. Its preliminary plan envisages a gross-cost PPP arrangement negotiated with the existing operator of the northern Purple Line.
MRTA expects to seek board approval in November or December 2026 before submitting the proposal to the Ministry of Transport, the national PPP committee and the Cabinet. Investor selection and contract signing are targeted for 2027 to support the planned opening.
The western Orange Line, running from Bang Khun Non to Thailand Cultural Centre, recorded civil works progress of 40.66%, railway systems progress of 7.89% and overall completion of 36.87%.
The western Orange Line received Cabinet construction approval on January 28, 2020, with work beginning on July 31, 2024. MRTA expects the section to open in July 2030.
Railway systems work on the eastern Orange Line, from Thailand Cultural Centre to Min Buri (Suwinthawong), was 75.12% complete.
MRTA expects the eastern section to begin free public trials in December 2027, followed by fare-paying services in January 2028. The eastern section would connect with the western Orange Line when it opens in 2030.
Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited (BEM), the Orange Line concessionaire, reported that trainset No 1 had completed production and factory testing in Turkey and was being sent to Germany for trial running before its subsequent delivery to Thailand.
Orange Line trainset No 2 was undergoing testing in Turkey and was expected to become the first trainset delivered to Thailand, arriving in late November 2026. Testing of the operating systems would follow its arrival.
BEM said the remaining trainsets were being manufactured according to schedule, supporting trials in late 2027 and commercial services in early 2028.
MRTA’s published feasibility assessments provide the following estimates, with the Orange Line figures covering the entire route.
The Southern Purple Line extension records an Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) of 13.69% (with an N/A Financial Internal Rate of Return) and expects 199,644 daily passenger trips in its opening year.
