Chud Thai promoted at Paris airport before UNESCO heritage review

The campaign follows billboards in France and Tokyo as Thailand prepares for consideration of its cultural heritage nomination in December 2026.

  • Chud Thai, the royally favoured Thai dress, is being promoted on a large screen at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport.
  • The promotion is part of a campaign to have the Thai national costume recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
  • The nomination for UNESCO status is scheduled to be reviewed in December 2026.

Chud Thai Phra Ratchaniyom, or royally favoured Thai dress, has been featured on a light-emitting diode (LED) screen in the central area of Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport in France, the country’s largest airport and Europe’s third busiest.

The display supports Culture Minister Sabida Thaiseth’s drive to secure intangible cultural heritage status for Thai national dress from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The nomination is due for consideration in December 2026.

The costumes have previously featured on giant billboards in several countries, including in France’s fashion capital and in three business districts in central Tokyo.

In 2024, the Cabinet approved the nomination of “Chud Thai: knowledge, craftsmanship and practices of the Thai national costume” for inscription on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

It is to be considered at the 21st session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Xiamen, China, in December 2026.
