Residents in Tha Sae district, Chumphon province, have been warned to prepare for possible flooding as Hat Taeng prepares to open its sluice gates following heavy rainfall that has caused water levels upstream to rise rapidly.
The Rap Ro Subdistrict Administrative Organisation (SAO) issued an urgent warning at 1pm on Thursday (October 29), advising residents of Rap Ro and neighbouring communities to take immediate precautions.
The local authority reported that persistent heavy rain had caused a rapid accumulation of water upstream of the dam, prompting preparations to open the sluice gates.
“Hat Taeng Dam is preparing to open its sluice gates,” the announcement stated.
Authorities warned that the release could cause water levels in major waterways and connecting canals to rise sharply within a short period, increasing the risk of flooding in downstream communities.
The warning identified households along canals as particularly vulnerable to rapid water flows and overflowing waterways.
Low-lying agricultural areas, including rubber, oil palm and durian plantations, could also face flooding and damage if water levels rise significantly.
Residents, particularly children, have been instructed not to swim or enter waterways near the dam and its sluice gates because of the danger posed by strong currents.
The SAO urged people living in vulnerable areas to remain alert and prepare for possible flooding.
The local authority issued precautionary advice to help residents protect themselves and their belongings.
Households were urged to move valuables, electrical appliances and vehicles to higher or safer ground before floodwater reaches their properties.
Families with young children, older people and bedridden patients should also prepare for possible evacuation to emergency shelters or relatives' homes in higher areas.
Residents have been advised to monitor announcements from community leaders and village public-address systems around the clock for updates on water levels and evacuation instructions.

The warning follows heavy rainfall across parts of Chumphon, with authorities particularly concerned about rapidly rising upstream water levels and the potential impact on downstream communities.
