Thailand face Philippines as SEA V Cup resumes in Chiang Mai

Thailand’s women’s volleyball team will face the Philippines on Friday (August 7) as the second leg of the BYD DMI 6th SEA V Cup 2026 begins at the 700th Anniversary Chiang Mai Sports Complex.

Thailand arrive in Chiang Mai after winning the opening leg in Hanoi, Vietnam, where they completed an unbeaten three-match campaign. Supporters will be hoping the hosts can extend their winning run when they begin the second leg against the Philippines at 4.30pm.

Indonesia and Vietnam will contest Friday’s opening match at 1pm.

Thailand name 14-player squad

The Thailand Volleyball Association has announced a 14-player squad combining experienced internationals and younger players for the Chiang Mai leg.

Setters: Pornpun Guedpard, the team captain, and Natthanicha Jaisaen.

Middle blockers: Thatdao Nuekjang, Kaewkalaya Kamulthala, Wimonrat Thanapan and Kanyarat Khunmuang.

Outside hitters and opposites: Ajcharaporn Kongyot, Sasipapron Janthawisut, Chatchu-on Moksri, Warisara Seetaloed, Jidapa Nahuanong and Pimpichaya Kokram.

Liberos: Piyanut Pannoy and Kalyarat Khamwong.

Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai is the team’s head coach.

Thailand cannot afford to underestimate Philippines

Thailand are ranked 17th in the world, while the Philippines are 66th, but their meeting in the first leg showed that the difference in the rankings does not guarantee an easy match.

The Thai team were pushed to five sets before defeating the Philippines 3-2 in Hanoi. The Philippines used an effective serving game to put Thailand under pressure, disrupting their rhythm and forcing the Thai players into unforced errors.

A significant change for the second leg is the return of Chatchu-on “BumBim” Moksri, who had been absent from the national team for almost six months. Her return is expected to add greater strength and consistency to Thailand’s attack and defence.

The coaching staff have also stressed that the players must quickly overcome signs of tension and a fear of making mistakes as they seek to produce a performance worthy of the home crowd.

Thailand unbeaten in last six meetings

Thailand have won each of their six most recent matches against the Philippines.

On August 1, 2026, Thailand won 3-2 in the SEA V Cup. They recorded two 3-1 victories in the 2025 SEA V League, on August 9 and August 1.

Thailand also defeated the Philippines 3-0 at the SEA Games on December 18, 2025, after registering straight-set victories in two SEA V League meetings on August 9 and August 3, 2024.

Thailand won all three matches in Hanoi

Thailand secured the first-leg championship after beating Indonesia 3-1, edging the Philippines 3-2 and overcoming hosts Vietnam 3-0.

They finished top of the standings with eight points, followed by Vietnam with six. Indonesia placed third and the Philippines finished fourth.

Friday’s matches and live coverage

Indonesia will play Vietnam at 1pm on Friday, before Thailand face the Philippines at 4.30pm.

Both matches will be broadcast live on ONE 31 and streamed online through the oneD application.
