The National Tourism Policy Committee’s second meeting of 2026 marked a significant turning point in shaping the direction of Thailand’s tourism economy.
Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun chaired the meeting, with Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool also involved in work on proactive marketing measures to generate tangible revenue for the country.
1. Fourth National Tourism Development Plan puts quality before volume
The committee approved in principle the draft framework for the Fourth National Tourism Development Plan (2028–2032), under the vision “Thailand as a World-Class Quality Tourism Destination”.
The strategic shift moves beyond competition based on visitor numbers towards tourism that generates greater value, guided by five strategic priorities:
Quality and added value: Develop tourism experiences that meet international standards and cater to visitors with high spending power.
Sustainability and balanced growth: Manage natural and cultural resources in line with good governance.
Competitiveness: Develop the workforce and infrastructure, and advance service innovation.
Resilience and readiness for change: Prepare for economic crises and external factors.
Data and integrated management: Link big data across the public and private sectors to guide policy more precisely.
2. Fourth-quarter 2026 campaigns and festivals to boost year-end revenue
To meet short-term revenue goals, TAT has drawn up urgent measures for the final months of 2026 in partnership with all sectors:
Building on global meetings: Capitalise on Thailand’s hosting of the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group to expand business tourism through meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE).
Stimulating domestic travel: Promote Amazing Thailand campaigns such as “Fly Across Thailand, Heal Your Heart on Every Trip” and “SINGLE JOURNEY 2026” to spread travel and tourism income to local communities.
International partnerships: Work with airlines and tour operators worldwide on promotional packages to increase flight numbers and passenger load factors.
Festival economy: Build global tourism appeal through year-end events such as Vijit Chao Phraya, Maha Loi Krathong, Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok 2026 and Amazing Thailand Countdown.
Cultural soft power: Promote the Royal Barge Procession, which forms part of the royal journey to present Kathin robes, to attract international visitors seeking to experience high culture.
3. Reviewing visa exemptions to reach high-spending Latin American markets
To create new business opportunities in long-haul markets, TAT proposed reviewing visa exemptions for stays of up to 30 days for tourists from Mexico and Colombia.
These visitors are considered a high-potential group, with long stays and above-average spending per person per trip.
The National Tourism Policy Committee agreed in principle to refer the visa-exemption proposal to the Visa Policy Review Committee for further consideration.
The proposed measure is expected to play a major role in attracting vast amounts of foreign currency into the Thai economy.
