Tokyo Game Show, one of the world’s biggest gaming events, is marking its 30th anniversary with more than 1,000 exhibitors from Japan and abroad.

The inaugural event drew 110,000 visitors and 87 exhibitors in 1996.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the show was staged online.

The five-day exhibition began at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, near Tokyo, on Thursday (September 17) and will conclude on Monday (September 21).

This year’s schedule is one day longer than usual, and organisers expect attendance to reach 300,000.

Square Enix Co. is presenting its new title “Final Fantasy VII Revelation”, which is scheduled for release in April.

Capcom Co. is highlighting “Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance”.

Sega Corp. is offering playable versions of two titles at its booth.

They are the new action game “Stranger Than Heaven”, due for release in January, and the popular role-playing game “Persona 4 Revival”.

The Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association organises the event.

Its chairman, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, told the opening ceremony: “Our role will be even bigger as one of Japan’s leading content industries.”
