Tokyo’s Oshima faces highest landslide alert as Typhoon Dujuan nears

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a Level 5 emergency landslide warning for Oshima town in Tokyo’s Izu Islands as Typhoon Dujuan brings heavy rain, NHK World reported.
Level 5 is the highest warning on Japan’s five-level scale. According to the report, it indicates a very high likelihood that landslides have already occurred. The agency urges residents in areas under an emergency warning to take immediate action to protect their lives.
Officials urged residents to move to safer locations. Where travelling to a designated evacuation centre would be too dangerous, they advised moving as far as possible from cliffs and streams or taking shelter on a higher floor of a building.
Heavy rain and strong winds forecast
The agency had earlier warned that Dujuan, designated Typhoon No 25, was approaching the Pacific-facing areas of the Tokai and Kanto regions, including the Izu Islands.
Heavy rain and strong gusts were forecast along the Pacific coast from Tokai to Tohoku during September 20-22, 2026.
Residents across eastern Japan and the Pacific-facing areas of Tohoku were urged to remain alert for landslides, localised flooding, strong gusts and rising river levels.
