By any conventional thinking, if Russia had wanted to influence the 2016 US presidential election, it should have weighed in for the Democratic Party rather than court the far-right of the Republican Party.
But the fact is that Russia today is not the same communist state of just a few decades ago. The country has become an authoritarian regime under strongman Vladimir Putin.
It is said that if President Putin’s assets were open to scrutiny, he could be revealed as the world’s richest man by far.
It is in the news that several of Putin's oligarch friends, both from inside and outside Russia, are alleged to have made huge real estate investments in the US - especially with the Trump Organisation. The rumours place President Trump in a difficult position, but only he can clear up them up.
