Fatal accident at BTS Punnawithi as contractor falls into underground drain
A 32-year-old contractor has died after falling into a drainage shaft beneath BTS Punnawithi on Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok on Friday morning.
A 32-year-old man died after falling into a drainage shaft beneath BTS Punnawithi station on Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok on Friday morning (September 18, 2026).
The Rama 199 emergency radio centre received a call for assistance at 7.04am after the man fell into a drain near the station in Bang Chak subdistrict, Phra Khanong district.
Firefighters and rescue personnel from Phra Khanong Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched to the scene. Initial reports indicated that the drainage shaft was around two to three metres deep, prompting an urgent search and rescue operation.
The Phra Khanong District Office later reported that at 8.55am, a diving team from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation found the man’s body inside the drain. The body was recovered and handed over to the relevant authorities for further procedures.
Initial information indicated that the man was a contractor working on underground electrical cabling.
He was believed to have entered the drainage area to wash himself after laying electrical cables before apparently slipping and falling in. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
