Police have solved some 90% of crime cases, or over 39,000 cases, in the first month under his leadership, Royal Thai Police commissioner-general Pol General Torsak Sukvimol said on Thursday.

Torsak, who was appointed National Police chief at the end of September, said the police forces under his leadership were successful in suppressing online scams, drug and gun trafficking, while protecting foreign tourists in line with the government policies.

Torsak said he has also been stepping up one of the so-called “Quick Win” policies of the Pheu Thai government by increasing perks and welfare for the police force so that they would better take care of the people.

Torsak announced that the police had been particularly successful in crime suppression.

A total of 43,512 crime cases were reported to police of which 39,273 — 90.25% — had been solved, which included 1,329 cases of violence, 4,918 theft, 767 intellectual property rights and 28,362 cases of violations against the state.

In nationwide crackdowns from October 9-11, police arrested 1,593 suspects and seized 2,008 illegal firearms, he added.

Torsak said he had also instructed tourist police to step up protection of foreign visitors to support the government’s policy of lifting visa requirements for tourists from China, Kazakhstan, India and Taiwan.

On drug suppression, police arrested 16,102 in 16,418 drug cases in October.

In October, police received 354,635 online complaints from victims of online scams and froze 1.316 billion baht worth of assets.

To provide better welfare for police, Torsak said he had ordered the metropolitan and regional police bureaus to provide fluorescent jackets to policemen to use during operations to protect themselves.

He also instructed all the bureaus to find enough accommodation for police officers nationwide.

Torsak said a website, chaladohn.com, is being launched to warn online shoppers of possible scam websites or possible mule bank accounts.
