Science offers food for thought – but chew it over carefully

In responding to Nigel Pike’s letter about the Graz University diet study, Diane Cornelius makes an important point when she notes that it “didn’t prove cause and effect”.
Suppose Mr X has heart disease and then goes on a vegan diet. You could describe him as a vegan with heart disease. But if the researcher doesn’t note that the vegan diet was the result, not the cause, of the heart disease, the study becomes totally absurd and irrelevant, which are the exact words I would use to describe every letter Mr Pike as ever submitted to this newspaper.
