Stellate ganglion block emerges as a 'reset' for the overactive nervous system

A new medical trend: Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) — a minimally invasive injection that helps “reset” the body's autonomic nervous system, easing chronic stress, anxiety and persistent insomnia at their source.

Chronic stress, anxiety and insomnia are no longer viewed simply as “emotional problems” or “temporary exhaustion.”

A growing body of medical thinking now links these conditions directly to the workings of the sympathetic nervous system — the body's “fight-or-flight” system, which governs how we respond to stress and helps regulate heart rate, blood pressure, sleep and the release of numerous hormones.

When the body remains under prolonged stress, this system can become overactive, driving a wide range of symptoms: heart palpitations, insomnia, anxiety, fatigue, brain fog, chronic pain, abnormal sweating and, in some patients, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

According to Dr. Noppachai Siranart, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Brigham and Women's Hospital / Harvard Medical School and founder of YOUNIFY Clinic — a healthy aging and wellness center specializing in weight management, knee and joint pain, and minimally invasive treatments — modern medicine is placing increasing emphasis on the autonomic nervous system, particularly in patients whose symptoms stem from chronic stress, disrupted sleep, or an overactive sympathetic response.

One technique now drawing growing international interest is the Stellate Ganglion Block, or SGB.

Understanding SGB — a tool to “reset” the autonomic nervous system

The Stellate Ganglion Block is a procedure in which a local anesthetic is injected near a cluster of sympathetic nerves in the neck known as the stellate ganglion.

The aim is to “reset,” or rebalance, the activity of the autonomic nervous system by reducing excessive stimulation of the sympathetic nerves — overactivity that is believed to underlie symptoms across several groups of patients.

SGB was originally used to treat certain chronic pain conditions, such as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), nerve-related pain, and circulation problems in the arms and hands.

In recent years, however, researchers have increasingly studied its role in patients with PTSD, chronic anxiety, insomnia and autonomic dysfunction.

The mechanism of SGB is to temporarily reduce sympathetic nerve signaling, allowing the body to shift into a more “relaxed” state.

It is thought to help lower the release of certain stress-related chemicals, such as norepinephrine, and to ease hyperarousal — the state in which the brain and body remain constantly on alert, commonly seen in people with PTSD or long-term accumulated stress.

In some patients, improvements after SGB may include better sleep quality, reduced anxiety, a calmer heart rate, or simply a greater sense of calm. Results, however, may vary from person to person, and careful evaluation together with a physician remains essential.

A minimally invasive option — but not for everyone

SGB is not yet considered a standard treatment for every emotional or sleep-related condition. Even so, it is attracting growing attention as one minimally invasive option — particularly for patients whose symptoms remain poorly controlled on medication alone, or who experience side effects from long-term drug use.

At the same time, SGB is not suitable for everyone. Evaluation by a qualified physician remains important in order to identify the underlying cause of a patient's symptoms and to design a treatment plan tailored to the individual.

The bigger picture: rebalancing the nervous system

Ultimately, the health of the nervous system and the quality of our sleep are tied to long-term whole-body health far more closely than many people realize.

Modern approaches to care are beginning to place greater importance on “rebalancing the nervous system” — addressing the root of the problem rather than treating symptoms at the surface alone.
