PTT to adjust wage early 2012

PTT is the first company expressing its readiness to raise the minimum wage by Bt300 per day for sub-contracted workers, in response to the government's policy.

The national oil and gas company, which is the biggest listed firm in terms of market capitalisation, is ready to shoulder the additional cost while expecting higher productivity.

PTT President and CEO Prasert Bunsumpun said that the higher wage will cover all sub-contracted workers of the company and subsidiaries, who are working in seven provinces - Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon, Samut Prakan and Phuket. The policy, to increase the spending about Bt500 million a year, would be effective on January 1, 2012.

PTT will also encourage the owners of PTT-branded fuel stations to raise the minimum wage. The company is studying how to help the operators cope with the measure.

"PTT hopes that the higher wage would not only improve the quality of life, but also boost their morale, which would induce higher productivity," he said.
