Ratchaburi Holding in biomass venture

Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding announced yesterday that it had entered shareholding and share-purchase agreements in Songkhla Biomass Company with Precise Power Producer Co.

Under the agreements, Ratchaburi Holding will own a 40-per-cent equity stake in Songkhla Biomass with 60 per cent held by Precise Power Producer. Songkhla Biomass will develop and operate a 9.9-megawatt biomass power plant fuelled by rubber-wood slabs and roots. The plant is in Songkhla province and is scheduled to be operational in 2014.

Noppol Milinthanggoon, chief executive officer of Ratchaburi Holding, said the plant would require an investment of Bt600 million. It meets the company's strategy of increasing its capacity of renewable energy to 100MW by 2016. It also aligns with the government's policy of promoting renewable energy and reducing the use of fossil fuels for power generation. This project will be granted an adder tariff of Bt1.30 baht per unit from the Power Department Fund Management Division of the Energy Regulatory Commission for seven years.

With this investment, Ratchaburi Holding has 80MW of renewable-energy power-generation capacity.

DHL adds three 777Fs

DHL, the world's leading international express provider, is adding three Boeing 777 freighters to expand its capacity and speed transit times along key growing trade routes linking the Americas, Asia and the Middle East. DHL has signed an air-service agreement with Southern Air Holdings to operate the new 777 freighters, the most fuel-efficient aircraft of their kind.

The first 777F, which began service on August 15, will connect DHL hubs in Cincinnati, Bahrain and Hong Kong, moving around the world with each operation.

The 777 freighter is expected to burn about 20-25 per cent less fuel than its competitors and has a superior maximum-payload range on this routing, allowing more markets to be served |non-stop.

DHL already has eight other 777Fs in its fleet. The continued upgrade to more efficient aircraft is in keeping with its commitment to increase its carbon efficiency by 30 per cent by 2020.
