GPF ups alternative investment

The Government Pension Fund (GPF) is increasing its alternative investment portfolio to Bt45 billion within three years, expecting to generate 9.2 per cent on average annual return from the investment in real estate, commodities and other unconventional i

Sopawadee Lertmanuschai, secretary-general of the GPF, said that at Bt45 billion, the alternative investment will account for 12 per cent of the fund's asset value. At present, the ratio is Bt25 billion or 6.6 per cent.

The fund started investment in alternative bets in 2000, to ensure that its annual returns beat inflation. The investment is also aimed at diversifying risks from deposits as well as investment in bonds and equities.

"Alternative investment is gaining popularity among institutional investors... These bets are likely to offer the natural hedge against inflation," Sopawadee said.
