1,600cc cars will be hit hard
Honda Jazz, Honda City, Toyota Vios, Toyota Yaris and Nissan March will benefit from the government's first-car purchase scheme, while passenger vehicles with 1,600cc engine are expected to be hit the hardest by the policy.
A source from the hire-purchase industry who asked not to be named said that the policy to provide tax rebates to purchasers of passenger cars with engine of 1,500cc or lower would boost the attraction of the small cars.
While demand for cars with higher power, like those with 2,000cc, would remain unaffected, those who plan to buy a 1,600cc car should be encouraged to opt for the slightly smaller cars, he said.
Today, representatives from the hire-purchase industry as well as automakers had a meeting with Deputy Finance Minister Boonsong Teriyaphirom, after the government revealed details of the plan yesterday. Purchases under the scheme are entitled to excise tax rebates upto Bt100,000.
Aside from small passenger cars, commercial pickups are also entitled to the excise tax rebates.
Boonsong said today that the rebates will be sent directly to the buyers, not their lenders.
