SE Asia wire and tube industry keeps on growing pace

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2011

15 September 2011, Bangkok - Wire and tube industry in Southeast Asia is seen carrying on its growing pace, with the effectiveness of the Asean Economic Community (AEC) is considerably buoyant to the sector, according to participants at the Wire/Tube Sout

SE Asia still holds great potential for growing despite unfortunate global financial crisis unavoidably affecting the region, said Ferruccio Bellina, President of the Italian Wire Machinery Manufacturers Association, who led around 80 members to exhibit at the show held during Sept. 13-15 at BITEC in Bangkok.

"We aren't looking only at the presence but also to the future. Infrastructure in this area is increasingly needed.  We are sure soon or later there will be a lot of needs for wire and cable products that we produce.  This is because the wire and cable products are used widely in various industries including infrastructure construction sector, building industry, automotive and tire industries, telecommunication sector and many other industries," Mr. Bellina said.

Taking into consideration the nature of the wire, cable and tube industry that is rather secure, despite extremely robust growth can't be expected, the huge recession of the sector is also very rare, he said.

The opening of AEC in the point of view of Mr. Bellina, it will certainly brings the boon to the wire and cable sector as relevant investments are expected to expand within the community thanks to the more comfortable raw material and product exchanges that could help in reducing cost of production.

"We could ultimately even achieve changing without spending and avoiding extra cost. And the money can go to the economy" Mr. Bellina said.

This 2011 wire and tube Southeast Asia is 3rd edition held in Bangkok after relocating from Singapore where the show has been organized during 1995-2005. The show gathers 385 international market leader exhibitors including eight national groups and pavilions from Austria, China, Germany, Italy, Singapore, United Kingdom, Taiwan, and USA.

Mr. Gernot Ringling, Managing Director of Messe Düsseldorf Asia, the organizer of the event, said "With the central theme of vision, innovation, and technology, we are looking forward to a vibrant and busy exhibition at

wire and Tube Southeast ASIA 2011, showcasing the best brand names from the wire, cable, tube and pipe sectors from 32 countries. There is much international interest and participation from the exhibitors with about 85% coming from outside of the ASEAN region."

Mr. Bellina shared his view that SE Asia has a plenty of room for new investments in wire and cable industry. But one point to be considered is that the region should seriously look at the efficiency to producing in best possible efficient way rather than relying on labor incentive.

"Cheap labor is temporary. People who understand this will then prepare themselves for the change and survive but those who can't do so will then disappear," said Mr. Bellina.

Menam Stainless Wire Public Co., LTd., a Thai veteran stainless wire manufacturer, is one of the exhibitors at the show. The company showcased its newest product stainless steel welding for motorcycle that features durability, longevity and sturdiness, according to Marketing Manager Theerarat Khunchaleam.

"We are the first in Thailand that can produce this kind of stainless steel welding and automotive leader like Honda use our product as raw material for their Honda motorcycle manufacturing. That guarantee the superior quality of our product," Mrs. Theerarat said.

Menam exports 50% of its new stainless steel wire to Indonesia and Vietnam with the balance is sold in domestic market.
