Govt urged to speed up on protest law

On September 21, members of traders in the Ratchaprasong area grouped under Democracy Without Infringement are prepared to submit the open letter to Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, calling for the government to speed up on the draft law on public prot

Chai Srivikorn, a member of the group, said that the law would play a crucial role in promoting Thailand's democracy and maintaining peace. He noted that political and non-political protests in the past have caused havoc to the country and the innocent citizens.

"The law is an agreement towards mutual understanding of all parties, which should diminish troubles for the general public," he said.

Chai said that the prime minister should assign an individual who is to handle protests, so that the network can directly deal with the person. He also urged all protest leaders to show their responsibility to society, by informing the authorities in advance to ensure orderly traffic and safety.

The law is now under the Senate's screening.

Traders in the area suffered largely from the political protests last year.
