Finance not yet names SEC chief

The Finance Ministry has withdrawn its Securities and Exchange Commission chief nomination from the Cabinet's meeting agenda today.

Finance Minister Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala gave a brief comment on the move: "It's not finalised yet".

In the morning, a source from the government told Krungthep Turakij that the ministry submitted the nomination of Vorapol Socatiyanurak as the new secretary-general of the SEC.

The nomination, which does not include incumbent deputy secretary-general Chalee Chantanayingyong, was not originally put on the Cabinet meeting agenda, the source added.

The SEC board of directors on Sept 1 nominated two persons for Finance Minister Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala's consideration. Vorapol, rumoured to have close connection with Pheu Thai Party, is now the director of National Institute of Development Administration (Nida)'s competitiveness centre.
The two were shortlisted from four applicants including Rapee Sucharitakul, a former veteran servant of the SEC; and Chaipat Sahasakul, a director of the Stock Exchange of Thailand. Chalee won the highest praise for his vision, followed by Vorapol.
Vorapol earned master and doctoral degrees in finance from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, USA. In his presentation to the SEC board, Vorapol said he has extensive knowledge in the capital market, profound understanding in the real sector and SMes, and experience in economic issues.
He believed that his incredentials would serve the SEC well, given that Thailand is going to be part of the Asean Economic Community. He sees the need to lift up the capital market's growth and efficiency, with focus on transparency to boost the national competitiveness.
