Too soon to think about moving plant, Honda says

Honda Automobile (Thailand) said yesterday that relocating its manufacturing facilities to elsewhere in Thailand would not be an easy matter.

Executive vice president Pitak Pruittisarikorn said it was too soon to think about moving plants to a safer place. The company has to consider the government’s measures to alleviate the flooding problem before considering this issue, he said.
The cost as well as the impact on its production output this year could not be evaluated yet, as it does not know when the water will be pumped out from the Rojana Industrial Park.
“The government should hurry and drain the areas outside the industrial estate so that the inside of the estate can be drained,” he said.
Hundreds of new cars, waiting for delivery to customers, were immersed in water after Rojana Industrial Park's flood barriers collapsed last weekend.
Honda insists that these cars will not be marketed.
Its plant and all machines are covered by insurance.
Last week the company took some 4,000 cars out of the site to a place away from the floods, but hundreds of vehicles were still left at its plant.
Honda has invested Bt21 billion in Thailand. It has two assembly plants in the Rojana Industrial Park with capacity of 240,000 units per year.
