Fly on corporate wall

Bangkok Bank given a jolt

Many businesses have come to the aid of citizens hurt by the flooding, quite apart from donating money.
Bangkok Bank staff, led by president Chartsiri Sophonpanich, actually went to Ayutthaya this week and distributed 3,000 food boxes, drinking water and “life-support bags” to residents stranded in their homes.
Seeing their predicament clearly had a big impact on Chartsiri. He didn’t need to order further research. The next day he allocated Bt5 billion for loans to small and medium-sized enterprises in the crisis zone.

Tan in tears

Meanwhile Tan Passakornatee, who bottles Ichitan tea, kept going with the flow, donating more than Bt70 million to flood relief, including Bt30 million to the government’s crisis centre.
Tan was one of the first businessmen off the mark when the waters rose, posting a video online showing how to make a lifejacket out of plastic bottles and other bits.
He has also provided 130 boats and 7,000 of his employees to help the relief units.
Then on Wednesday Sorrayuth Suthassanajinda revealed on Channel 3 that Tan has a Bt3.5-billion production plant in Ayutthaya’s inundated Rojana Industrial Estate. His place is almost completely wrecked, as Tan saw for himself when he visited with food and other necessities for the staff.
Known for always sporting a sea captain’s cap, Tan was in tears as he vowed to protect his team and be the last one off his drowning ship.

Wild, not crazy

In other news, The Emporium backed up fast this week when some prominent names protested against its “Flora and Fauna Exotica” display, which included wild animals that normally aren’t keen about hanging around noisy, air-conditioned malls.
Dr Rungsrit Kanjanavanit, founder of the Lanna Bird and Nature Conservation Club and a respected cardiologist, led the protest, which resulted in several of the animals being sent back where they came from.
Joining Rungsrit were ML Thoswan Devakul of the Thailand Hornbill Project, environmentalists Samanrat Kanjanavani and Saisiri Chumsai Na Ayudhya, and Thanakorn Huntrakul, owner of the Tongsai resort in Samui.
