Electronics parts and car parts imports to be allowed

Import of car parts and electronics parts may be allowed to help industries that have suffered from shortage of components due to the devastating floods, Deputy Finance Minister Boonsong Teriyapirom.

The Customs and Excise departments will look at measures to support industries and allow them to import parts at lower tax rates than usual, he said. Carmakers and computer manufacturers have been facing shortage of components due to flooding, he said. The two departments have to come up with solutions which will then be forwarded by the Finance Ministry to the Cabinet for final approval, he said.
The Commerce Ministry has also created hotline 1569 as a centre to hear problems and requests from manufacturers. The ministry also plans to conduct roadshows in targeted exporting countries so that the importers have a clearer understanding of the massive floods in Thailand.
Deputy Commerce Minister Siriwat Kachornprasart said the ministry’s Department of Export Promotion is drawing up a special export promotion plan to directly encourage flood-hit manufacturers.
“The ministry treats this issue as urgent for which it has to prepare in advance to smooth exports once the crisis is resolved,” said Siriwat.
