Doi Chaang coffee named in Apec competition

Doi Chaang coffee early this month won the third-place award in the One Village One Brand scheme of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

Deputy Commerce Minister Siriwat Kachornprasart said yesterday that the Intellectual Property Department would continue to support brand development so more Thai products could be better recognised in the world market.
Doi Chaang coffee is one of 29 products in Thailand that have succeeded in obtaining geographic-indication certification. The department is now asking for GI certification for Doi Chaang coffee from the European Union.
Doi Chaang coffee’s retail prices have edged up by 50-100 per cent on average from the usual price.
The One Village One Brand contest was conducted by the Apec-Intellectual Property Rights Expert Group in South Korea. The winner was bamboo from China and the runner-up was a beverage from Chile.
Apec will help develop the brands of the top two winners after the contest. The competition was aimed at stimulating intellectual property rights awareness at the international level as well as encouraging local businesses to develop their own brands in order to increase the value of their products.
