Floods spur online banking

Banks say the flooding has seen an increase in the use of Internet banking services as many clients have been unable to reach bank branches.

Bank of Ayudhya (BAY) vice president Thakorn Piyapan said average mobile-phone banking transactions per customer per month increased to 4.7 in October from 3.1 in September as the flooding made travelling to banks inconvenient.
Mobile-banking transactions are expected to be even higher in November, Thakorn said.
Art Wichiencharoen, first senior vice president of Kasikornbank, said banking behaviour had of necessity changed with the widespread flooding making travel difficult for many people.
Many existing KBank clients who had not previously expressed interest have recently requested passwords for electronic banking services, which include balance inquiries, recent activity inquiries and money transfers, Art said.
Bankers believe the flooding will have a lasting effect on consumer behaviour, as it forced closures of many branches.
