President Krisda Monthienvichienchai said Mitr Phol would sell carbon credits to THAI, amounting to 60,000 tonnes of carbon emission from its bio-power plant in Suphan Buri province.
Mitr Phol Boi-power Ltd, a business unit of Mitr Phol Group, operates bio-power plants in Suphan Buri and Chaiyaphum provinces with combined emission reduction of 200,000 tonnes of carbon emission a year. Under the Certified Emission Reductions (CERS) programme, the plants will create 100,000 tonnes of carbon credits for three retroactive years.
The certification is expected to take place by 2012, ahead of the European Union's new carbon emission programme imposed upon commercial airlines.
THAI has to seek carbon credits for the flights in and out of Europe in 2012. The EU regulation forces airlines to reduce carbon emission or buy carcon credits, or face restrictions or a possible ban.
