Mandarin Oriental popular New Year's host despite recent crisis

The Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok has remained a preferred New Year celebration venue for the wealthy, receiving many reservations despite the recent flood crisis and current financial problems in the West.

A special desk has been set up to sell New Year packages to regular guests and newcomers. A hotel representative said requests for reservations were pouring in.

Other luxury hotels located along the Chao Phraya River are also offering packages to local residents and tourists, but Mandarin Oriental remains a top venue for well-heeled guests this New Year.
“We have just as many guests as usual even though we just had a flood. Guests from overseas are also returning to the hotel,” another staff member said.
Oliver Schnatz, executive assistant manager for food and beverages, said the “New Year’s Eve Gala Buffet Dinner” was priced at Bt18,000 net per adult and Bt12,000 per children. A set dinner at Le Normandie will be Bt19,900 net, while Lord Jim’s will charge Bt17,000 net.
Le Meriden Bangkok is promoting a New Year’s Eve dinner buffet at Bt1,000 per person. Children under three can dine for free and those under 12 get a 50-per-cent discount. The hotel is also promoting a New Year’s Day brunch at Bt1,000 per person.

In Chiang Mai, people planning to attend Royal Flora Ratchaphruek are advised to make reservations well in advance, as there are 25,000 visitors a day.
