Commerce seeks approval for palm oil import

The Commerce Ministry plans to seek 40,000 tonnes of palm oil imports, in an attempt to ease spiking demand at home.

Commerce Minister Boonsong Teriyapirom said that the ministry would ask for the Cabinet's approval soon, to have PTT Plc import the palm oil in a 1-month period. As the import price should not exceed Bt30 per kilo, this should prevent local prices from rising over Bt42 per kilo.

He noted that domestic price increases would only hurt consumers.
