This question really bothers me a lot as I know of people who expect their subordinates to respect them as their leaders. But unfortunately, except for the title they hold, there is little substance in them. This includes my superior, whom I do not respect as my leader. There is something about his ways, his thinking and actions that make me have this adverse feeling about him. I don’t want to be like him in the future when I get into his position. So what advice do you have for me to be a capable and respected leader in future?
Leader Aspirant
Actually you already know what they are, otherwise how would you know that your superior does not fit your bill as a capable and respected leader. If you care to reflect and go back to the people you admire in the past and the present, you will pick up many clues on why you hold them in such high regard. As a result, you have unconsciously set your expectations or criteria of what a true leader really is.
The Bottom Line: Build a list of the things you admire about them and organise them under four categories. The first one is their level of self awareness, where they consistently behave in ways that project their authenticity and conviction of what they believe in. The second one is their ability to self-manage themselves where they are consistently positive and focused as they know what they want exactly. Thirdly, they are people person, who due to their deep understanding and respect for other people’s cultures and style, act in ways that bring harmony and cordiality among them. Finally, they can build others due to their generosity to want to see others grow, like what they want for themselves.
Powerful Questions: Who are five people in your life, past or present, whom you admire most? What make them stand out above the rest? What are some of those qualities that these five people have that you also have? What are those you still lack? Where will your focus be in order to make you be the leader that you want to be?
