The hiring will be done on an outsourcing basis. Most of the positions will be in the operations area such as train drivers, station officials and maintenance staff.
The new staff are needed to replace those who are retiring and also to fill new positions to be created as a result of SRT investment worth Bt170 billion in new infrastructure through 2013, said Chalitrat Chandarubeksa, deputy spokesman of the Prime Minister’s Office.
The hiring is expected to reduce overtime costs and boost operating efficiency.
The state agency cannot recruit new staff to replace those who have retired during the past 10 years, because of a resolution passed by the previous Cabinet to reduce its personal staff costs. The state agency had 11,540 officials as of March last year.
During the next 10 years, 4,382 officials are expected to retire. Not replacing them is expected to see the number of officials at the SRT fall to 7,158 in 2020.
The Cabinet ordered the SRT to determine clear recruitment guidelines to fill the vacant
positions.
