"If a member of a club - I'm not now going to speak about any specific country - if a member of a club does not respect the rules of the club, it's better not to remain in the club," Jose Manuel-Barroso had told Italian broadcaster Sky Tg24 on Thursday.
On Monday, however, his spokeswoman said the president was speaking about "a general consideration" and not specifically about Greece.
"We see Greece's future in the euro. We want Greece to remain inthe euro because we believe ... that this is the best solution for Greece, for the Greek people and for Europe as a whole," Pia Ahrenkilde said ahead of a meeting in Brussels of eurozone finance ministers.
