House Committee presses for Ampon's clarification

The House Committee on Transport today resolved to summon Ampon Kittiampon, chairman of Thai Airways International Plc, for testimony following criticisms over the surprise dismissal of the airline's president, Piyasvasti Amranand.

Jua Ratchasee, chairman of the House Committee, said that Ampon will be summoned next week to further clarify conflicts with Piyasvasti over the aircraft acquisition plan. Ampon will also be asked to explain other issues, including negative reports on the state enterprise's good governance.
Through THAI's acting president, Chokchai Panyayong, the THAI board of directors in May decided to prematurely terminated the employment contract of Piyasvasti over conflicting opinions on the acquisition of 38 aircraft worth Bt240 billion. Under the employment contract, Piyasvasti's term was supposed to end next year when he turns 60.
Today, the House Committee observed the testimony of Chokchai. Still, Jua said that his explanation is unclear. Given that this dismissal taints THAI's image, it is necessary for the national airline to restore the image and improve communications with employees and outside communities, he added.
In her testimony today, Jamsri Sukchotirat, chairwoman of THAI's labour union, said that Ampon had to bear responsibility for all mishaps, particularly the dismissal of Piyasvasti whose performance won high marks and high acceptance from employees. She reiterated that Ampon has so far refused to clarify this matter, which only fuels criticisms against his behaviour.
