BMTA's restructuring plans win initial approval

The State Enterprise Policy Office (SEPO) has approved in principle Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA)'s plans for early retirement and new NGV bus acquisitions, said Deputy Transport Minister Chatchart Sithipan.

The early retirement plan will cover 2,400 employees while BMTA plans to buy 3,183 NGV buses worth over Bt13 billion.
Chatchart said that BMTA will have to work out more details for the plan and resubmit the document before the end of this month.
"Two sub-committees will be established to look into details of these two issues," he said.
On the proposal that BMTA generates revenue from its bus parking areas, Chatchart noted that this would be difficult as the land plots are not located in prime areas like those of State Railway of Thailand.
BMTA has shouldered accumulated debt of over Bt76 billion.
