Ministry to open pledging programme for maize crop

The Commerce Ministry is preparing to open a pledging programme for maize this month, as farmers are expected to suffer falling prices during the harvest season. Permanent secretary Yanyong Phuangrach said maize production was expected to increase by another 100,000 tonnes from last year to 4.3 million tonnes this year, with about 80 per cent being harvested this month.
“The maize price could fall during the harvest season. The government will pledge maize at Bt8.35 per kilogram to ensure that prices do not fall sharply,” he said.
The government aims to pledge up to one million tonnes of maize. The price of maize remained high in June, quoted at Bt9.01 per kilo, as the crop was yet to reach the harvest season. – The Nation
