At a glance, there is nothing to connect the games with Dow Chemical. Yet, like George Hamilton, vice president of Dow Olympic Operations, put it: chemistry surrounds us everywhere and Dow’s products and solutions can be used in a variety of different applications at Olympics venues, including traffic lane coatings and artificial turf for a football field or even a sustainable, fabric wrap that encircles London's iconic Olympic Stadium.
Hamilton said with the products, Dow can help equip athletes with light-weight clothes, breathable fabrics and textiles that sustain different temperates and perform in a variety of climate conditions. For sustainability reason, technologies originally designed to enhance and prolong performance life of roads and bridges, or traffic paints are also applied with the venue.
In sponsoring the games, Dow, with innovation engine geared towards four mega trends - energy, transportation and infrastructure; consumerism; and health and nutrition, hope to show worldwide population how these products and solutions can be applied.
“Telling them about the opportunities of chemistry, we are communicating to a broader audience the key message that chemistry is no longer associated with something non-positive to environment. On the contrary it helps to preserve the planet not only at a global level but on an individual basis. And that’s important. Having seen first hand how – for instance – Dow’s insulation materials are used at Olympic venues, an individual might be willing to equip his or her own house with the same high quality product and excellent performance,” Hamilton said.
