State-owned DPO looks beyond Asean for expanded dairy sales

The Dairy Farming Promotion Organisation is targeting not only Asean but China, Japan and South Korea for its expansion.

“In 2015, the DPO aims to sell its Thai-Danish dairy products in all Asean countries,” Suchart Jariyalertsakdi, deputy director-general of the DPO, said yesterday.
The state-owned enterprise plans to enter China and Vietnam this year.
Niwat Sutemechaikul, deputy permanent secretary of the Agriculture Ministry, said Thailand this year would penetrate the dairy market in Asean as well as Asean+3.
After restructuring, the DPO set up a sales department to oversee marketing and promotion of its products in overseas markets.
Once the Asean Economic Community fully implements a single market as scheduled in 2015, Thailand’s dairy products are expected to |gain more popularity among Asean |consumers.
Compared with other Asean countries, Thailand is considered one of the most competitive in terms of dairy |production and quality, according to |an analyst.
Suchart said that this year the organisation planned to export its dairy products to Vietnam and China through sales representatives. It has received a good response from interested local merchants.
The DPO has sales representative offices in Laos and Cambodia and for Myanmar, a sales representative in Tak province’s Mae Sot district.
The DPO has exchanged comprehensive information on its marketing plan, types of products, demand for products and retail prices structures with parties interested in becoming its sales representatives.
A merchant with businesses in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore is interested in ordering Thai-Danish dairy products to test those markets. However, there might be more than one sales agent in mainland China.
This year, the DPO forecasts total sales of Bt6 billion in dairy and related products, or 500 tonnes of fresh milk per day.
