Senator mulls probe by NACC

Appointed senator Paiboon Nititawan yesterday said that he would consult with a group of senators tomorrow whether the October 16 auction lacked transparency and might have violated the state bidding law.

He said they might seek a probe by the National Anti-Corruption Commission and if necessary take legal action against the telecom committee members, including Suthiphon, Colonel Settapong Malisuwan, Prasert Silphiphat and General Sukit Khamasundara.

He said there were some suspicious issues. For instance, the NBTC rushed to endorse the auction result without waiting and listening to the warnings by related agencies such as the Comptroller-General’s Department, which said there might have been no real competition. The bid price increased too few times when you take into account the time allowed and the number of slots suited the number of the bidders, with each bidder allocated three slots. The reserve price was set at Bt4.5 billion instead of Bt6.440 billion according to a study by Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Economics.
