Rice-pledging scheme remains biggest question: Poll

The government's rice-pledging scheme is highlighted as the first agenda of the Opposition's censure debate, followed by skyrocketing goods prices and water management, according to a poll.

In the Bangkok University's Poll which covers 1,182 respondents across the country, 42.3 per cent supported the censure debate on rice-pledging scheme, while 41.1 per cent and 30.4 per cent put the remaining two topics as the priority.

The Opposition will file the no-confidence motion against the government by end of this month. The government's rice-pledging scheme has been heavily criticised, as it opens doors for politicians and their associates to take bribes.

In the poll, 47.4 per cent of all participants believed that the Opposition would have no new information or evidence to support the debate while only 19.5 per cent placed confidence in the Opposition.
Sixty one per cent expected no change in the government's policy, no matter if the Opposition's evidence carries weight. Believing so, 18.8 per cent of the respondents said that the government was convinced that it is doing a right thing, 15.2 per cent said the government just followed its election promises, and 14.2 per cent said politicians fear of losing benefits.
Only 38.6 per cent of them believed that the government would adjust its policy after the censure debate.
The respondents also wished politicians avoided being rude, disrespect and evasive during the debate.
