Japan expected to resume imports this year: CPF

Charoen Pokphand Foods, Thailand's largest poultry exporter, has high hopes that Japan will reopen the market for Thailand's frozen chicken this year thanks to improvement in bird flu control.

Close cooperation by public and private sectors promises no spread of such virus throughout the supply chain, said Teerasak Urunanon, executive vice president, Livestock Food Processing Unit.
In a statement released today, he said Japan is expected to reopen the market for frozen chicken from Thailand this year following the dispatches of inspectors to the Kingdom. The latest check was in March.
He said that Japan's resumption of imports would help stabilise chicken price, as oversupplies will be eased.

The statement was released as a new strain of bird flu - influenza A(H7N9) virus - spreads human infection in China. As of April 7, a total of 21 cases have been laboratory confirmed with influenza A(H7N9) virus in China, including six deaths, 12 severe cases and three mild cases.
