Finance assures Japan of investment privileges

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong on Thursday assured Japanese investors that there would be no change to the existing investment privileges to foreign companies operating in Thailand.

After the discussion with representatives of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, he said that if any rules are to be changed, they must be well-substantiated. For example, Thailand once promoted labour-intensive investment, but this had to be adjusted given tight labour market.
"Before introducing any change to the investment promotion package, we will notify foreign investors in advance and give them an ample time for adjustment," he told reporters.
Both parties discussed the investment outlook in the region, and JCC assured that the region would remain a key production base for Japanese investors. JCC also urged Thailand to extend the promotion period. Kittiratt promised to discuss this issue with the Board of Investment.
