The Industry Ministry expects the value of applications for investment privileges and support this year to reach Bt1 trillion, higher than the original target of Bt700 billion.
Industry Minister Prasert Boonchaisuk said applications by Japanese companies would continue to increase, suggested by the fact that Japanese investors applied for support of 216 projects worth Bt149 billion in the first four months, making them the dominant players among a total of 747 applications worth Bt509 billion in the period.
“The value of the applicant projects in the first four months is very high, suggesting that the total value this year could reach Bt1 trillion,” he said. Japanese businesses are keen to invest in the environment-management system in Thailand, he added.
Textile, garment exports rise 2.6%
The Thailand Textile Institute says the export of textiles and garments in the first four months of the year rose 2.6 per cent to US$3.242 billion (Bt99.36 billion), of which $898 million was the value of garment exports, which dropped 5.4 per cent year on year. Yarn-export value rose 8.6 per cent to $306 million.
The decline of garment exports is due to low demand in euro-zone countries, while demand for many types of textile did well, as the major markets are in Asia.
