Nippon Pack takes stake in Udon Plaza

Nippon Pack (Thailand) Co Ltd will spend Bt80 million to take a 20.51-per-cent stake in Udon Plaza Co Ltd, operator of UD Town in Udon Thani province.
The move into the property sector is a diversification strategy for the manufacturer of retail and food packaging, managing director Surapong Treamchanchai said.
The company’s investment in Udon Plaza will focus on development of a hotel and convention centre in Udon Thani that will serve as a gateway for cross-border trade with Laos in the Asean Economic Community (AEC), he said.
Nippon Pack is also investing Bt60 million to expand its packaging plant on Rama II Road, which aims to boost the company’s revenue growth by 40 per cent this year compared with the year before.
Udon Plaza’s four-star hotel and convention centre will cost Bt120 million and will be situated on two rai at UD Town. The project will be complete by 2015, just in time for the AEC. The company also plans to be listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand in 2014, with revenue targets for this year set for Bt150 million, up Bt10 million from last year, company president Thanakorn Verachatiyanukul said.

Visa-on-arrival for Thais to Japan
With effect from next Monday, Thais heading to Japan for a 15-day visit will not need to apply for a visa in advance, the Japanese Embassy in Bangkok announced. This relaxation of visa rules is to promote bilateral relations.
Those who want to stay longer are still required to apply for a visa, though those visiting for just two weeks can get stamped in on arrival.
The embassy said immigration officials will still require necessary information as well as a return ticket for visa on arrival.

AirAsia drops JV
AirAsia has terminated its planned AirAsia Japan joint venture, following challenges since its launch two years ago, which included fundamental differences of opinion between shareholders on how the business should be managed, cost management and where the domestic business operations should be located.
AirAsia struck a deal with ANA Holdings to terminate the joint venture. ANA Holdings will buy out the 49-per-cent stake held by the Malaysia-based airline. AirAsia aircraft leased to the joint venture will be returned on November 1.
AirAsia Group chief executive Tony Fernandes said he still believed in the potential of low-cost carriers in Japan. “I remain positive and believe there is tremendous opportunity for an LCC to succeed, as proven by the tremendous success of AirAsia X. We have not given up on the dream of changing air travel in Japan and look forward to returning to the market,” he said.
