TrueMove, DPC clients can use service after concession ends

TrueMove and Digital Phone Co were ordered yesterday to start sending SMSs to all 17 million subscribers next month informing them that they can still use cellular services as usual after the two companies' concessions expire on September 15.

“The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission will launch interim measures to ensure that all subscriber services are still on track. Here is our keyword SMS to all users,” said Korkij Danchaivichit, deputy secretary-general of the NBTC.
TrueMove has about 17 million users and DPC 80,000 users for their 1800MHz cellular services under concessions from state enterprise CAT Telecom, which was also ordered to send out SMSs.
Only two months are left but the NBTC has not yet announced the final plan to oversee all these stranded users.
The NBTC plans to allow CAT, True Corp and DPC to discuss among themselves which of them will take care of the 17 million users. They will meet to discuss the matter after the July 25 public hearing on the NBTC’s draft remedy measure to protect these users.
Earlier this week, the Senate committee on science and technology asked the Telecom Committee of the NBTC to explain the draft remedy plan.
Some committee members reportedly raised legal questions, such as whether the NBTC has any right to award a one-year oversight licence.
