SET opens investment info centre in Northeast

The Stock Exchange of Thailand on Monday launched a new financial and investment information centre in Ubon Ratchathani University, providing information to students, investors, securities professionals, and the general public in Ubon Ratchathani and neighbouring provinces.
Currently, there are six SET Investment Centres in universities nationwide: Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Naresuan, Suratthani Rajabhat, and Ubon Ratchathaini universities, and Prince of Songkla University’s Hat Yai campus. The exchange will next launch an SET IC at Kasetsart University’s Sri Racha campus.
SET president Charamporn Jotikasthira said expanding financial and investment literacy nationwide was one of the bourse’s key missions.
A vital key to the success of this mission is to have a strong university network to distribute information throughout the region.
Thus the SET has cooperated with Ubon Ratchathani University’s faculty of management science to open an SET IC.
Pattera Dilokrungthirapop, chairwoman of the Association of Thai Securities Companies (ASCO), said the SET IC would also enable securities officers in provincial branches to serve investors more effectively, because the officers could learn via the centre’s online media, training and other channels.
In addition, ASCO will help fund the Young Investor Club of Ubon Ratchathani University’s faculty of management science, she said.
This assistance is meant to enable students to study investment, paving the way for them to be prudent investors or professionals in the securities business.
An SET IC follows the concept “Your Investment Centre: One You Can Reach”, offering a modern and comprehensive learning source equipped with a variety of learning media from the SET, it says.
The centre provides comprehensive information online, including SETSMART for information on listed companies and stock prices, live broadcasts for Opportunity Day activities, Aspen and Click2win programs, and e-learning on www.tsi-thailand.org.
The total value of each SET IC is Bt4.5 million.

Thailand to join pact for  Power Coordiantion Centre
The Energy Policy and Planning Office (Eppo) of Ministry of Energy will sign a MoU with six countries in sub-Mekong region on December 15 in Vietnam to jointly set up the Regional Power Coordination Center (RPCC).
Thailand is the only country among them that has yet to sign on the MOU.
The meeting of these countries on December 15 will also consider proposals of some countries that want to house this centre. The Eppo's director-general Samerjai Suksumek said that he is hopeful Thailand will be selected to house RPCC, given Thailand has planned to purchase electricity from these countries.
The RPCC will be funded by the sub-Mekong region members and other sources for its operation and R&D.

KResearch trims bank loan growth forecast to 10%
Kasikorn Research Centre has cut its estimate for lending growth in the banking industry this year to 10 per cent from the earlier projection of 11 per cent, due to lower demand.
The research house said the demand for lending over the remainder of the year was likely to slow, as more companies turn to working capital or already-secured long-term lending for funding.
The private sector is waiting for a clearer picture to emerge in terms of both economic recovery and political stability, it said, while many retail customers have suspended their spending on big items after borrowing during the first-car scheme.
Lower loan demand from both commercial and retail customers has, however, helped improve liquidity in the banking industry, the centre said.

Auto sales should rise in Nov, unless politics has hit demand
Vehicle sales this month should be higher than in October, as long as the ongoing political instability has not affected demand, Vudhigorn Suriyachantananont, senior vice president at Toyota Motor Thailand, said yesterday.
He expects overall sales figures for the sector to be higher, thanks to new models launched in October as well as marketing campaigns to be launched at the upcoming “Motor Expo”.
“Yet, the political instability could affect the overall economic picture, and the auto industry,” he said.
Only 88,989 vehicles were sold in October, representing a 38-per-cent decline from the same period last year, according to sector-wide data compiled by Toyota Motor Thailand.
Due to the plunge in last month’s performance, auto sales in the first 10 months of the year dropped by 1.8 per cent to 1.12 million units.
Vudhigorn attributed the October plunge partly to the launch of new models at the end of the month, as well as a cut in passenger-car model output in preparation for the production of new models.

New investors drawn to SET in the City
Despite a more volatile market, the four-day “SET in the City” event spurred transactions of more than 180,000 items, according to the Stock Exchange of Thailand.
The event, which ended on Sunday, drew more than 90,000 visitors, 57 per cent of whom were newcomers. The SET said this reflected a growing number of new investors who see the importance of gathering adequate information before spending their money.
