Thai shares up on institutional demand

The Stock Exchange of Thailand Tuesday witnessed a gain for the second day, thanks mainly to demand from local institutional investors.

The composite index went up by 12.31 points or 0.96 per cent to 1,295.87 points on turnover of Bt35 billion.
On Monday, the index gained 2.24 per cent.
Foreign investors sold Bt1.5 billion net on Thai shares on Tuesday. So far this month, it has been net-buyers, with Bt3.3 billion in net-buy position.
With net buy of Bt1.79 billion on Tuesday, local institutions this month sold Bt4.56 billion net of Thai shares.
Earlier on the day, the SET Building was locked down. SET Executive Vice President Bordin Unakul said that the doors are closed following the news reports that protesters would march to the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre (QSNCC).
The SET Building is located next to the centre.
"The building is closed for a safety reason," he said.
He noted that stock trading operations still continues as usual.
He also insisted that the trading system would stay operational even when protesters seize the building.
According to Bordin, no brokerage house has reported difficulties in transmitting transaction orders. If one third of all brokers have that trouble, the trading system would be cancelled.
"We’re not worried that the trading system would be cut off. It would stay open even if the building is seized for as long as a month," he added.
