Business registration up 5 per cent last year, Commerce Ministry says

Last year 67,000 companies nationwide filed for business registration, an increase of 3,457 or 5 per cent over the 63,845 companies registered in 2012, a new high, the caretaker Commerce Ministry reports.

Most of the business registrations were in the construction and property sectors.
Political factors should play a vital role in the number of business registrations this year. Nattawut Saikua, caretaker deputy minister of commerce, said he hoped the next government could restore investors’ confidence to maintain the business-registration growth.
Last month, there were 2,906 new partnership types of business registrations nationwide, down by 1,491 firms, or 34 per cent relative to the 4,397 firms in November, and down by 1,634 firms, or 36 per cent, from the 4,540 firms in December 2012.
Meanwhile last month, 4,582 companies nationwide filed for business liquidation.
The total registered capital of newly listed firms last month was Bt33.81 billion, up by Bt8.36 billion, or 33 per cent relative to Bt25.45 billion in November, and up by Bt17.02 billion, or 101 per cent, over Bt16.79 billion in December 2012.
The outlook for continuing growth in new business registrations this year will depend on the global economic recovery, Thai economic growth, domestic demand, private- and public-sector expenditure, domestic political stability and how the next government will restore investors’ confidence in Thailand, Nattawut said.
As of December 31, the number of registered business nationwide stood at 559,713, with registered capital totalling Bt10.75 trillion, comprising 381,436 limited companies, 1,038 public listed firms and 177,239 limited partnership/registered ordinary partnership firms.
