Workshop on competition law

In preparation for seamless trade in Asean, the Internal Trade Department is cooperating with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Korea Policy Centre to stage an international workshop in Bangkok on the perils of collusion. The three-day workshop for Asean member nations finishes tomorrow.
Santichai Santawanpas, deputy director-general of the department, said the government and private enterprises in Asean needed to learn more about each country’s competition law to ensure fair treatment after the liberalising of the market with the full introduction of the Asean Economic Community next year.

E-accountant service
The Business Development Department has teamed with the Federation of Accounting Professions to set up a single-point e-accountant service that will be available nationwide in preparation for full Asean integration.
Pongpun Gearaviriyapun, director-general of the department, said the system would not only help accountants but also improve the transparency of accounting reports, as fewer people would be involved.

RS eyes lawsuit
RS is threatening to sue the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission if its subsidiary does not get the full compensation of Bt427 million for allowing the 2014 World Cup matches to be broadcast live on free-to-air television.
Surachai Chetchotisak, chief executive officer of the country’s leading music and entertainment conglomerate, said in a company statement yesterday that RS International Broadcasting and Sport Management – the rights licensee to the 2014 Fifa World Cup Finals – needed the total amount of compensation that the NBTC promised to pay because the company was now suffering from opportunity losses.
The soccer tournament has been over for more than two months but the company has received just Bt118 million.

Value-added products
Siam Cement will invest Bt3.19 billion in building-materials projects to continue developing high-value-added products.
It will invest in its HVA mortar plants to expand production capacity, construction-related retail business in Asean and research and development as part of its vision to become a sustainable-business leader in Asean.
Kan Trakulhoon, president and CEO, said yesterday that Bt2.8 billion would be spent on  HVA mortar plants in Khon Kaen and Lampang, with expected start-up in the first half of 2016.

Muang Thai expands
Muang Thai Life Assurance is the first Thai life-insurance firm to receive a licence to open a representative office in Myanmar.
Sara Lamsam, president and chief executive officer, said yesterday that the company aimed to make necessary preparations before the introduction of the Asean Economic Community (AEC).
This licence was granted amid Myanmar’s legal constraints on insurance businesses. About 13 companies including Myanmar Insurance have received licences. All of them are local operators, as foreign companies still are not allowed to operate an insurance business in the country.
