NBTC, digital TV broadcasters to meet before vouchers sent out

As it prepares to start distributing discount vouchers for digital TV receivers on October 10, the regulator will meet with commercial broadcasters next week about a public relations campaign to raise awareness about digital-television service areas and t

Takorn Tantasit, secretary-general of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), said yesterday that the meeting would be held next Thursday, October 9, and his administrative office would invite all 24 commercial operators of terrestrial-based digital TV to attend.
One key topic will involve the way the Bt690 coupons will be used towards the purchase of digital set-top boxes from dealers qualified by the NBTC. Another topic is how to promote and build awareness of digital broadcasting, which will change the behaviour of people watching free TV.
“We want to make sure that after each household receives a Bt690 coupon from us, they can find the right way to use it and how to install the new advanced digital TV set-top box properly,” Takorn said.
However, he acknowledged that households that receive the coupons in some areas might not be able to watch digital TV programmes because of weak signals despite being located in the service area.
To deal with this problem, the NBTC plans to deploy groups of staff to communicate supportive information and deliver further assistance in those areas. These groups will also educate people in other service areas about the benefits of digital TV.
The NBTC also introduces a “DTV Service Areas” application for both desktop and smart devices. This app will provide up-to-date information about digital service areas and where the nearest broadcasting tower is to help people position an outdoor antenna correctly.
Users can also submit complaints about the service directly via this application.
